Football Team's Peyton Barber: Shouldn't be ignored
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Ron Rivera warned reporters not to forget about Barber, Kyle Stackpole of the official team website reports.

A reporter mentioned Antonio Gibson and Bryce Love while discussing the Washington backfield after Derrius Guice was released. Rivera responded by mentioning Barber, who made 23 starts for Tampa Bay the past two seasons but averaged only 3.5 YPC over that stretch. He figures to compete with Adrian Peterson for carries on early downs, while Gibson and J.D. McKissic are more likely to handle passing downs. Love could be an option for a variety of situations, though he's essentially an unknown after missing his 2019 rookie season with a knee injury.

Redskins' Peyton Barber: Joins crowd in Washington
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber is signing a two-year contract with Washington, Jeremy Fowler of reports.

Washington entered the offseason with Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson and Bryce Love (knee) in the backfield and now has added Barber and J.D. McKissic. The team figures to carry three or four running backs on the Week 1 roster, so Barber will need to battle for a spot unless there's a glut of injuries in front of him. With career averages of 3.6 yards per carry and 6.1 per reception, the 26-year-old isn't likely to find regular touches now that he's left the RB abyss of Tampa Bay.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Quiet end to season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed six times for 10 yards and secured two of four targets for 24 yards in the Buccaneers' 28-22 overtime loss to the Falcons on Sunday.

He finished the 2019 season with 154 rushes for 470 yards and six touchdowns while adding 16 receptions on 24 targets for 115 yards and another score. Barber set a career high for touchdowns in 2019, but that was partly offset by a career-low 3.1 yards per tote. The fourth-year pro also saw an 80-carry drop from 2018, with Ronald Jones taking on a much bigger role. The 25-year-old Barber is set to become an unrestricted free agent this coming March, and the Buccaneers could make upgrading the running back position one of their top offseason priorities -- making a return to Tampa unlikely.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Mediocre production in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed five times for 13 yards and lost a fumble in the Buccaneers' 23-20 loss to the Texans on Saturday.

Barber saw backfield mate Ronald Jones receive nine more carries, making it one of the rare weeks in which there was a clear pecking order in the ground attack. Barber has rushed for under 20 yards in two straight games and for less than 50 yards in all but one contest this season. The fourth-year pro is thus a middling fantasy option against the Falcons in Week 17.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Another lackluster showing
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 10 times for 17 yards and brought in both his targets for 23 yards in the Buccaneers' 38-17 win over the Lions on Sunday.

Barber saw one fewer carry than backfield mate Ronald Jones as their fantasy-averse time split in the ground game continued. The fourth-year back did have a modest role in the passing game again, giving him back-to-back multi-catch efforts for the first time all season. Given the Buccaneers' pass-heavy tendencies and the offensive line's inability to consistently open up holes for any of the team's backs, Barber remains a middling option heading into a Week 16 battle against the Texans.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Same rushing workload as Jones
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 11 times for 34 yards and brought in both his targets for 19 yards in the Buccaneers' 38-35 win over the Colts on Sunday.

Barber and Ronald Jones split the rushing workload right down the middle, and the former was also encouragingly involved in the passing game with his fifth instance of multiple targets this season. Neither Barber nor Jones have been able to get much going on the ground, however, and the Buccaneers' offense seems destined to continue to mostly flow through the right arm of Jameis Winston for the three remaining games of the regular season. Barber will hope for opportunities to exploit the vulnerable Lions defense in Week 15.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Remains second on depth chart
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber is expected to serve as the Buccaneers' No. 2 running back Week 14 against the Colts after coach Bruce Arians reiterated Wednesday that Ronald Jones is the team's top option on the depth chart, Scott Smith of Tampa Bay's official site reports. "I don't have any concerns about the running game right now," Arians said. "RoJo's still our starter and we'll get him going."

Jones had outpaced Barber in offensive snap share for four consecutive games until the former noticed a reduced role in Sunday's 28-11 win over the Jaguars due to a missed blitz pickup in the third quarter of the contest. With Jones in the doghouse, Barber earned all the first- and second-down work thereafter, finishing the day with 17 carries -- his most since Week 2 -- for 44 yards and two touchdowns. The pair of scores gave Barber a nice fantasy line, but it obscured what was another typically inefficient showing for the Auburn product, who is now averaging just 3.2 yards per carry for the season. Jones (3.9 YPC) gives the offense a more explosive element, so expect him to remain ahead of Barber in the pecking order as long as he avoids the mistakes that have occasionally cropped up during his two years in the league.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Surprises with pair of touchdowns
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 17 times for 44 yards and two touchdowns in the Buccaneers' 28-11 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also had a two-point conversion run.

In a game that unfolded in rather surprising fashion overall, Barber fittingly punched in multiple touchdowns for the first time all season. The fourth-year back ended up outpacing backfield mate Ronald Jones by 11 carries overall, with Greg Auman of The Athletic reporting that coach Bruce Arians explained the lopsided division of labor as a function of Arians going with the "hot hand" in the backfield and Jones also having missed a blitz pickup at one point. Despite Barber's surprising success Sunday, the Bucs' backfield remains a week-to-week situation that is averse to fantasy production. Barber will look to build on his strong effort versus the Colts in Week 14.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Solid workload in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 11 times for 32 yards and failed to bring in his only target in the Buccaneers' 35-22 win over the Falcons on Sunday.

Barber notably only saw one fewer carry than backfield mate Ronald Jones, and he got just one target to Jones' three in the passing game. Although coach Bruce Arians made mention of Jones as his lead back several weeks ago, the reality is Barber and Jones appear destined to remain in a fairly even timeshare the rest of the way. That naturally does fantasy managers of either player no favor, but Barber will look to put together one of his occasional touchdown-dependent fantasy performances Week 13 against the Jaguars' vulnerable run defense.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: In end zone as receiver
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber did not log a carry in the Buccaneers' 34-17 loss to the Saints on Sunday but brought in both his targets for 11 yards and a touchdown.

The fact Barber did not see a carry for the first time all season and backfield mate Ronald Jones logged just four speaks to how quickly the Buccaneers abandoned the run game. Despite the unprecedented lack of action on the ground, Barber salvaged his fantasy day with a six-yard touchdown reception at the 2:42 mark of the second quarter, getting his team on the board for the first time all afternoon. The receiving score was only the second of Barber's career, and he'll remain a risky play in all formats in a Week 12 battle against the Falcons.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Notches winning score
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 11 times for 43 yards and a touchdown and secured his only target for four yards in the Buccaneers' 30-27 win over the Cardinals on Sunday.

After seeing Ronald Jones officially named the starting running back by coach Bruce Arians earlier in the week, Barber responded by recording a game-winning one-yard rushing touchdown with 1:43 remaining. Barber also ended up matching Jones in carries, as it appears that irrespective of depth chart slotting, Arians will continue to ride the hot hand week to week. Barber now has four rushing touchdowns on the season and will look to build on Sunday's effort versus the Saints in Week 11.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Major downturn in involvement
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed just four times for 15 yards in the Buccaneers' 40-34 overtime loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.

Barber was a firm second fiddle to backfield mate Ronald Jones, seeing 14 fewer carries, the biggest gap in workload between the two this season. The 25-year-old has managed 32 yards or fewer on the ground in six consecutive games, and he's been under 50 in all but one contest this season. Consequently, regardless of how the workload is divided in Week 10 against the Cardinals, Barber's fantasy ceiling projects to continue capped in all formats.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Can't find running room in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 10 times for 20 yards and brought in one of three targets for eight yards in the Buccaneers' 27-23 loss to the Titans on Sunday.

Barber's final line underscores how poorly the team's running game performed overall in the Week 8 loss. The Buccaneers' co-lead back saw only one fewer carry than backfield mate Ronald Jones, so the team's timeshare remains in place, much to the chagrin of each player's fantasy managers. Barber will look for better production against the Seahawks in a Week 9 battle.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Paces backfield in carries
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed eight times for 28 yards in the Buccaneers' 37-26 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.

Barber doubled up backfield mate Ronald Jones in carries as their timeshare continued in confounding fashion Sunday, but game script ensured neither back could be much of a factor. Barber has single-digit touches in three straight games heading into the Bucs' Week 7 bye, and the fantasy-adverse workload split between him and Jones will continue in a Week 8 matchup versus the Titans.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Finds end zone in limited usage
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed eight times for 32 yards and a touchdown and secured his only target for minus-1 yard in the Buccaneers' 31-24 loss to the Saints on Sunday.

Barber capped off a massive 17-play, 75-yard third-quarter march with a two-yard touchdown run, his second on the ground in as many games. The fourth-year back has seen single-digit carries in both of those contests, though he logged only one fewer tote than backfield mate Ronald Jones on Sunday and also saw game flow conspire against the running game overall. Barber remains a touchdown-dependent option in all formats heading into a Week 6 tilt versus the Panthers in London.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Salvages line with rushing TD
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed nine times for 19 yards and a touchdown and failed to bring in his only target in the Buccaneers' 55-40 win over the Rams on Sunday.

Barber started the game and capped off an eight-play, 60-yard first-quarter drive with a three-yard touchdown run. However, as the game went on, Ronald Jones took on the majority of the backfield workload, ultimately logging 10 more carries than Barber. That represented the biggest disparity in opportunity between the two backs in Jones' favor this season and could be indicative of a gradual changing of the guard at running back. Barber will look to make his case and up his production in a divisional matchup versus the Saints in Week 5.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Serviceable in Week 3 loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 13 times for 48 yards and brought in both of his targets for seven yards in the Buccaneers' 32-31 loss to the Giants on Sunday.

Barber logged one fewer carry than Ronald Jones, who was the more efficient and explosive player with a 25-yard rush and 41-yard reception. Barber did contribute several of his trademark power runs in the contest and should continue enjoying a relatively steady role, despite the fact Jones is clearly a more dynamic asset overall. The conundrum for fantasy managers will be figuring out which back will have the hot hand on any given week, as coach Bruce Arians rightfully appears to be firmly committed to sticking with what's working in the backfield on a game-to-game basis. Barber is struggling with his efficiency (4.1 yards per carry or less in each of his first three games), so he'll look to improve in that regard versus the Rams in a Week 4 road tilt.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Clear-cut lead back in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed 23 times for 82 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for seven yards in the Buccaneers' 20-14 win over the Panthers on Thursday.

Just four days after Barber logged only eight carries in a season-opening loss to the 49ers, he significantly outpaced backfield mate Ronald Jones on Thursday. Coach Bruce Arians had made it clear Barber would open the game and he'd ultimately stick with whichever back had the hot hand, and Barber forced the issue with a gutsy display of power running that was highlighted by his 16-yard scoring scamper up the gut in the third quarter. Barber was also taken down for a safety by Luke Kuechly early in the fourth period, but he subsequently took seven carries for 29 yards during a critical 11-play, 53-yard drive which culminated in a Matt Gay 32-yard field goal that extended the Buccaneers' lead to 20-14 with 2:26 remaining. Barber's performance only served to strengthen his grip on the starting job, so he should once again as the lead back when Tampa faces the Giants in a Week 3 home matchup a week from Sunday.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Getting Week 2 start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Bruce Arians said that Barber will remain the Buccaneers' starting running back for Thursday's matchup with the Panthers, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

Barber drew the start in the 31-17 loss to the 49ers in Week 1, but was on the field for only 25 of 70 offensive plays (35.7 percent) while backups Ronald Jones (31.4 percent) and Dare Ogunbowale (38.6 percent) handled similar snap shares. Ogunbowale should remain the Bucs' top option on passing downs Thursday, but Arians indicated he plans to ride the hot hand between Barber and Jones in the run game. Though Barber managed a serviceable 33 yards on eight carries in the opener, Arians leaned on Jones more heavily since the second-year back found more success (13 carries for 75 yards). The lack of a bankable workload renders Barber a somewhat unreliable fantasy play this week, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he falls out of the game plan entirely if Jones outperforms him again early in the contest.

Buccaneers' Peyton Barber: Loses work to Jones
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Barber rushed eight times for 33 yards and two of four targets for 12 yards in the Buccaneers' 31-17 loss to the 49ers on Sunday.

Barber saw Ronald Jones garner 13 rushing touches to his eight, while the second-year back also took all the fourth-quarter carries. Coach Bruce Arians will naturally still utilize both of his primary backfield options, but it remains to be seen if Jones' stronger performance Sunday is parlayed into a second straight game with a heftier workload than Barber's. That much will be answered in Thursday night's Week 2 battle against the Panthers, but this could turn into an ongoing, multi-week puzzle for fantasy owners unless one of the two backs falls into a clear No. 2 role.
