49ers' C.J. Beathard: Finishes third on depth chart
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard did not see the field while serving as the 49ers' third-string quarterback in 2019.

San Francisco -- in unorthodox fashion -- decided to keep three quarterbacks on its 53-man roster after the team was unable to trade backups Nick Mullens and Beathard during the preseason. This move showed the confidence the coaching staff has in the 26-year-old's abilities as a signal caller. Beathard's 57.3 completion percentage and 12:13 TD:INT ratio came in less-than-ideal conditions, but he has shown to have accuracy on shorter pass attempts with some athleticism as a runner when called upon. Both he and Mullens can be kept around on affordable contracts for 2020, so it will be interesting to see if the team decides to run with three quarterbacks again following a healthy season from starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Not playing Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard is inactive for Monday's tilt against the Browns.

Beathard is a healthy scratch with Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens both ready to go. Barring an injury to either of those two signal-callers, Beathard lacks a clear path to fantasy relevance this season.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Stays on roster as third QB
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard survived the final roster cuts Saturday, but he will begin the year as third on the quarterback depth chart behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

It was a bit surprising the 49ers actually kept three quarterbacks on the active roster, but it was not surprising that Mullens beat Beathard for the primary backup job based on their usage this preseason and their results last year. The 25-year-old should be one of seven inactives on game days this season, and it would take injuries to both quarterbacks ahead of him in order to even sniff fantasy relevance.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Healthy scratch Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard was not used in Saturday's dress rehearsal preseason game against the Chiefs.

Beathard was not listed on the injury report, so Saturday's absence heavily signifies that Nick Mullens will be Jimmy Garoppolo's primary backup to begin the regular season. That said, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the 49ers will unconventionally keep all three of its signal callers this season, Cam Inman of The Mercury News reports. The possibility remains that one of the NFL-capable backups is traded before the season (potentially to Indianapolis following Andrew Luck's sudden retirement).

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Practices Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard (thumb) participated in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Beathard suffered a thumb injury during Saturday's game against the Cowboys, the severity of which kept him sidelined during Tuesday's practice. The third-year quarterback managed to return Wednesday, and will resume competing for the No. 2 quarterback role with Nick Mullens.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Battling thumb injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard did not practice Tuesday after suffering a thumb injury during Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Beathard had a solid outing Saturday, throwing for 141 yards, a touchdown and an interception, but he appears to have emerged with an injury. As of now, Beathard is unable to comfortably grip a football and will not be able to practice until he can.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Solid line Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard completed 13 of 17 passes for 141 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason opener against Dallas.

Nick Mullens started this contest, which suggests that he has the early edge over Beathard for being Jimmy Garoppolo's backup this season. Both quarterbacks completed well over 50 percent of their passes and had a touchdown and a pick apiece, so neither really separated themselves from the other Saturday. Expect this job battle to go on until the final stage of roster cuts.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Getting shot at No. 2 job
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard and Nick Mullens will start the offseason program on even ground in a competition for the No. 2 quarterback job, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. "We'll rotate C.J. [Beathard] and Nick [Mullens] with the twos," coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday. "[We'll] flip a coin the first day."

A 2017 third-round pick, Beathard has just one victory in 10 NFL starts, with his functional ability to move the ball (6.8 YPA, 4.6 YPC) negated by a plethora of sacks (37), interceptions (13) and fumbles (eight). Mullens lacks the draft pedigree and had the same issues with sloppy mistakes, but he at least went 3-5 as the starter last season while completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 8.3 yards per attempt. With two capable backup quarterbacks on hand, the 49ers would be wise to consider a trade, though that's far from a sure thing with Jimmy Garoppolo working his way back from an ACL tear. Despite what Shanahan said, Mullens should have the upper hand in this competition.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Falls out of favor in 2018
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard started five games for the 49ers this season, finishing with 1,252 passing yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 60 percent of his passes.

Beathard took over for Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) starting in Week 4, and while he couldn't lead the 49ers to a victory in his five starts, he performed adequately from a statistical standpoint. Still, the 49ers' losing streak forced Kyle Shanahan's hand, and he benched the 25-year-old in favor of practice-squad quarterback Nick Mullens. The latter possessed a stronger arm and was able to make some big plays for the team, leaving Beathard on the bench for the rest of the campaign. The initial assumption is that Garoppolo will be ready to go next season, so the 49ers will have to make a decision on who their backup quarterback will be. Beathard and Mullens figure to compete in camp, with the latter having the upper hand based on how the 2018 season concluded. It wouldn't be surprising to see San Francisco trade one of the two young signal-callers, as both have proved that they can play at the NFL level.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Won't start Week 13
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard will remain the 49ers' backup quarterback for the team's Week 13 game with the Seahawks after coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday that Nick Mullens would retain the starting role, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Mullens will be under center for the fourth consecutive game, but Shanahan made it clear that the Southern Mississippi product's grip on the No. 1 gig is far from secure. Since lighting up the Raiders for 11.9 yards per attempt and three touchdowns in his NFL debut in Week 9, Mullens has regressed badly in his last two outings against mediocre teams in the Giants and Buccaneers, completing 63.4 of his passes for 6.6 YPA, two touchdowns and four interceptions. Mullens will face his stiffest test to date on the road versus the 6-5 Seahawks and could be at risk of getting benched if he struggles for the third game in a row. That would pave the way for Beathard to get another look, but the 2017 third-round pick hasn't proved to be any better of an option through his first two seasons in the league. Over 13 appearances (10 starts), Beathard has completed 57.3 percent of his passes for 6.8 YPA and a 12:13 TD:INT while fumbling eight times.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Could get another shot
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard may get another chance to start for the 49ers at some point in December, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Nick Mullens predictably has regressed since his 262-yard, three-score NFL debut Week 9 against Oakland, throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions the past two games -- both of which were losses to sub-.500 teams. Beathard has his own issues with turnovers, but holds advantages over Mullens in terms of size, mobility and arm strength. Looking beyond this season, the 49ers still need to figure out if either player is good enough to serve as their long-term No. 2 quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo (knee).

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Backup role confirmed
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nick Mullens confirmed that he would continue to serve as the 49ers' starting quarterback Week 10 against the Giants, relegating Beathard to the No. 2 role, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Though Beathard looks to be in decent health after his wrist/thumb injury limited him to backup duties in the Week 9 win over the Raiders, it would have been a major surprise if he reclaimed the top gig after Mullens dazzled in his NFL debut. Mullens torched the Raiders for 262 passing yards and three touchdowns while completing 16 of 22 attempts in the 34-3 win. Perhaps most notable was the fact that Mullens didn't commit a turnover, an area where Beathard (seven interceptions, three lost fumbles) has faltered through his five starts this season. It's possible that Beathard will earn another opportunity to start later in the campaign if Mullens falters in his subsequent opportunities, but for the time being, the second-year signal-caller's future in San Francisco beyond 2018 suddenly looks murky.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Likely to stick in No. 2 role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard is expected to remain the 49ers' backup quarterback in Week 10 against the Giants with Nick Mullens on track to earn another start, Jay Glazer reported on "Fox NFL Sunday."

After Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 3, Beathard started the 49ers' subsequent five contests, completing 60.4 percent of his passes while averaging 7.4 yards per attempt and throwing for eight touchdowns and seven interceptions and losing three fumbles. Though a wrist/thumb injury rather than those lackluster numbers resulted limited him to a backup role in Thursday's 34-3 win over the Raiders, Beathard will lose out on the starting gig mostly as a result of Mullens' breakthrough performance. Mullens completed 16 of 22 passes for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 9 win, showing incredible poise for a quarterback who had taken no prior NFL snaps. It appears the 49ers will give Mullens at least one more opportunity to prove his worth, though any major downturn in productivity could result in Beathard recapturing the top job.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Could lose starting role to Mullens
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Kyle Shanahan hasn't announced his plans at quarterback for the 49ers' Week 10 matchup with the Giants, but Beathard seems unlikely to receive the starting nod over Nick Mullens after the latter's stellar outing in Thursday's 34-3 win over the Raiders, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Listed as questionable heading into the Week 9 contest with wrist and thumb injuries that had made gripping the football in an issue, Beathard was cleared to suit up but was limited to backup duties. That paved the way for Mullens to pick up his first career start, with the 23-year-old acing the assignment while completing 16 of 22 passes for 262 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the resounding win. Considering that Beathard has been a turnover machine (seven interceptions, three lost fumbles) in his six appearances this season and owns a 1-9 career record as a starter, it makes sense for the 49ers to give Mullens an extended look even if Beathard's health isn't a concern moving forward. With San Francisco not playing until Monday night in Week 10, it may be several more days before Shanahan commits to a quarterback.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Active, but backing up Mullens
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard (wrist/thumb) is active for Thursday's game against the Raiders. However, he'll serve as the backup quarterback to fill-in starter Nick Mullens, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

In the wake of a Week 8 loss at Arizona, Beathard suffered from a lacking grip due to wrist and thumb injuries to his right hand. The development opened the door for 2017 undrafted free agent Nick Mullens to take his first NFL snap. That said, the 49ers released journeyman QB Tom Savage on Thursday, which leaves Beathard as the only other signal-caller on the gameday roster.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Will be backup QB on Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard (wrist/thumb) is expected to serve as the backup quarterback to Nick Mullens on Thursday against the Raiders, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Beathard will take a brief step down on the 49ers depth chart due to his inability to grip a football at the moment. While he won't start the game under center, he'll be the only other QB on the 46-man gameday roster after the 49ers released Tom Savage on Thursday afternoon, meaning Beathard could still make an appearance.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Viewed as '50-50' for Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard (wrist/thumb), who is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Raiders, is considered "truly 50-50" for the contest, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

As coach Kyle Shanahan noted earlier this week, the injuries to Beathard's throwing hand are still making it difficult for him to grip the football, a troubling development for a player that has already fumbled five times in six games. The 49ers will presumably wait and see if Beathard's condition has improved at all closer to game time before rendering a decision on his availability, but Nick Mullens -- who has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL -- will direct the offense if Beathard isn't deemed fit to play. An official call on Beathard's status will likely come around 6:50 p.m. EDT, when the 49ers will release their inactive list approximately 90 minutes before kickoff.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Appears truly questionable for Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard (wrist) participated in Wednesday's walk-through practice and is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Raiders, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

The 49ers upgraded Beathard to limited participation on the final injury report after listing him as a non-participant Monday and Tuesday. His wrist injury isn't believed to be serious, but a short week means he'll likely play through soreness and discomfort if he does end up getting the start. Barrows speculates that the 49ers might want to use Beathard's wrist injury as a convenient excuse to look at untested quarterback Nick Mullens in a game situation. It isn't a crazy idea for a team with no hope of reaching the playoffs, but coach Kyle Shanahan would probably still prefer to start Beathard if that's realistic option. The 2017 third-round pick reportedly has been struggling to hold a football, and he acknowledged Wednesday that his wrist and thumb are "kind of messed up." An official call on Beathard's status may not come until Thursday, with Shanahan referring to Beathard as a game-time decision. It doesn't help that skill-position players Matt Breida (ankle), Pierre Garcon (shoulder/knee) and Raheem Mostert (ankle) are also listed as questionable, potentially leaving Beathard or Mullens without enough help to take advantage of a favorable matchup.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Status still murky for Week 9
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Beathard acknowledged Wednesday that his right wrist and thumb "are kind of messed up," casting some doubt on his availability for Thursday's game against the Raiders, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Tuesday that Beathard's two injuries have affected the quarterback's ability to grip the football. It appears the second-year signal-caller hasn't demonstrated much progress a day later. The 49ers should provide an update on Beathard's condition as well as an official injury designation for the game following Wednesday's practice, but it's looking more and more likely that the 23-year-old will be sidelined for Week 9. If that's the case, Nick Mullens would likely pick up the start in what would amount to his first meaningful NFL action, while veteran Tom Savage would be on hand as the No. 2 quarterback.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Status for Week 9 in question
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Beathard (wrist) is struggling to hold a football, which is threatening his availability for Thursday's game against the Raiders, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Beathard emerged from Sunday's loss at Arizona with a wrist injury. A decision on Beathard likely will come down to the wire, per Shanahan, but the quarterback is missing back-to-back practices to kick off Week 9 prep, according to Inman. Nick Mullens is the next man up at quarterback in San Francisco.
