Raiders' Marcus Mariota: Expecting backup role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota said Tuesday that he's ready to serve as Derek Carr's backup with the Raiders, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports. "First and foremost, this is Derek's team, and I understand that," Mariota said.

Mariota was awarded a two-year, $17.6 million contract with $7.5 million guaranteed last week, sparking rumors of a job battle between Carr and Mariota. The former Titan was quick to shoot down those rumors, but there's no way to spin it as a positive for Carr when his team brings in the highest-paid backup in the league. Carr may still have security for the Week 1 starting job, but he'll be looking over his shoulder if he struggles early in the season.

Raiders' Marcus Mariota: Contract parameters outlined
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota's deal with the Raiders is two years for $17.6 million, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

The report notes that $7.5 million in the first year of the contract is fully guaranteed, with incentives also included in the QB's agreement with the team. For now, Mariota slots in behind incumbent starter Derek Carr, but it's plausible that down the road, Mariota -- the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft -- could make a run at the Raiders' top job, if Carr experiences any on-field struggles or suffers an injury.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Inks deal with Raiders
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota and the Raiders agreed to terms on a contract Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Mariota becomes the first quarterback domino to fall in free agency, as the former Titan was brought in to push incumbent Derek Carr for the starting job. Mariota was looking for a fresh start after he was replaced by Ryan Tannehill in Week 7 of last season. Before the demotion, the 26-year-old completed 95 of 160 passes for 1,203 yards along with a 7:2 TD:INT across seven games. The Raiders' quarterback competition will be as intriguing as any in the league heading into the 2020 season.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Searching for fresh start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota passed for 1,203 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions across six games as the Titans' starter in 2019.

Mariota was benched after leading the team to a 2-4 record to begin the season. Though he avoided turnovers, he struggled to get the ball out in rhythm, taking 25 sacks in his short stint under center. Mariota is likely to hit the open market this offseason as his rookie contract has expired, and the team appears poised to commit to Ryan Tannehill as its starter in 2020. Though Mariota has disappointed relative to his status as the number two overall pick in the 2015 draft, he has shown flashes of promise and is still just 26 years old. He could sign with a quarterback needy team and immediately compete for a starting job.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Sent to bench
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota will be replaced by Ryan Tannehill as the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

There were rumblings after Mariota was replaced by Tannehill late in Sunday's game that he could be heading for the bench, and coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that notion. Mariota played turnover-free football the first five games of the campaign, and completed 61.7 percent of passes during the Titans' 2-3 start. Things took a turn for the worst in Denver, when the former No. 2 overall pick completed just seven of 18 passes for 63 yards and two interceptions. Mariota had started 61 of 62 games for the Titans to this point in his career, but with the 25-year-old in the final year of his rookie contract, he could be looking for a new team at seasons end.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Starting run could be over
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Mike Vrabel said that he'll decide later Monday or Tuesday on whether Mariota or Ryan Tannehill will start at quarterback Week 7 versus the Chargers, Jim Wyatt of the Titans' official site reports.

Mariota played turnover-free football for the first five games of the season but was only adequate from an efficiency standpoint during the Titans' 2-3 start, completing 61.7 percent of his throws for 7.9 yards per attempt. Things fell apart Sunday in Denver, however, as Mariota tossed two interceptions and completed only seven of 18 attempts for 63 yards before being pulled from the contest in the third quarter. Mariota's tenuous hold on the starting job may have been aided by Tannehill failing to produce any points on four drives and capping the day with an interception of his own, but Vrabel presumably will review the film before committing to a quarterback for Week 7. Neither player would shape up as an especially appealing option this week in fantasy leagues that start only one quarterback.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Replaced by Tannehill
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota was replaced by Ryan Tannehill in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Broncos, Erik Bacharach of The Tennessean reports.

Prior to being pulled from the contest, Mariota completed seven of 15 passes for 63 yards and two picks. Tannehill will now look to help bring the Titans back from a 13-0 deficit, and if he shows well, he could enter the Week 7 starting conversation.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Faces regular pressure in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota completed 13 of 22 passes for 183 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Week 5 against Buffalo. He also added five rushes for 13 yards.

Despite the return of Taylor Lewan (suspension), Mariota faced consistent pressure and was sacked five times. He did manage a 57-yard completion, though that came on a screenplay to Jonnu Smith with the entirety of the yardage coming after the catch. As has been the case for much of the season, the Titans appeared intent on limiting Mariota, as he now has under 30 pass attempts in four of five games. A big performance doesn't appear likely in Week 6 either, as he will head to Denver to take on the Broncos.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Three-touchdown performance
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota completed 18 of 27 pass attempts for 227 yards and three touchdowns in Week 4 against Atlanta. He also added three rushes for 22 yards.

Mariota jumped out to a hot start, completing 14 of his 19 first-half pass attempts, accounting for all three of his touchdowns and 189 yards. He formed a particular connection with rookie wideout A.J. Brown, delivering touchdowns of 55 and 11 yards to him. With the Titans in command of the game throughout the second half, the team focused on running the ball, slowing Mariota's big performance. Still, his effort -- and the team's victory -- should keep him under center for the foreseeable future and ahead of Ryan Tannehill on the depth chart. Mariota will look to build on the performance in Week 5 against Buffalo.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Won't lose job yet
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Mike Vrabel said Mariota isn't in danger of losing his starting job right now, Jim Wyatt of the Titans' official site reports.

The Titans are off to a 1-2 start, with Mariota taking 17 sacks and completing just 60.9 percent of his passes. Tennessee's offensive line may be part of the problem, but Mariota has shown a disturbing tendency to hold the ball for too long. His average time from snap to throw (2.97) is fourth-longest in the league, putting him on track for a second straight season leading the NFL in sack rate (15.6 percent this year, 11.3 percent in 2018). The Titans may consider a switch to Ryan Tannehill at quarterback if Mariota doesn't turn things around Week 4 in Atlanta.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Plenty of yardage in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota completed 23 of 40 passes for 304 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Titans' 20-7 loss to the Jaguars on Thursday. He also rushed six times for 34 yards and fumbled once but recovered.

The final yardage numbers were certainly encouraging from a fantasy perspective, but Mariota couldn't parlay them into any trips to the end zone. The Titans' one touchdown came on a Derrick Henry one-yard run in the fourth quarter, while the majority of Tennessee's other drives were halted and unproductive for the most part, thanks in large part to the nine sacks the Jaguars managed versus the fifth-year quarterback. Mariota did author a 12-play, 81-yard march late in the game, but that possession ended with a 22-yard completion to Adam Humphries as time expired. Mariota displayed encouraging chemistry with the possession receiver by connecting with him on six occasions for 93 yards. Nevertheless, the Titans are now 1-2 after an encouraging start versus the Browns in the opener and will have 10 days to contemplate their fate before a Week 4 interconference clash with the Falcons a week from Sunday.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Cleared to play Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota (quad) does not carry an injury designation for Thursday's game against the Jaguars, Turron Davenport of ESPN.com reports.

Through the Titans' first two games, Mariota has achieved a degree of fantasy utility by recording 402 passing yards and a 4:0 TD:INT ratio to go along with eight carries for 56 yards. He'll take aim Thursday at a Jacksonville defense that allowed 40 points to the Chiefs in Week 1 but tightened up this past Sunday in a 13-12 loss to the Texans.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Slated for full practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Mike Vrabel said prior to Tuesday's practice that Mariota (quadriceps) would be a full participant, Erik Bacharach of The Tennessean reports.

When the Titans released their estimated practice report Monday, Mariota was listed as a non-participant on account of the quad issue, creating some uncertainty about his status heading into the Thursday night matchup with the Jaguars. Assuming Vrabel's comments hold true, Mariota will likely avoid an injury designation entirely in Week 3. Mariota has yet to commit a turnover through his first two starts while completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 7.7 yards per attempt and four touchdowns.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Dealing with quad issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota (quadriceps) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's practice estimation, Erik Bacharach of The Tennessean reports.

Given that the Titans played Sunday, the team didn't have a formal practice Monday, but the noted designation makes Mariota's status worth monitoring in advance of Thursday's game against the Jaguars. Mariota was sacked four times in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Colts, the same number of times he was taken down in Week 1's 43-13 win over the Browns.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Modest production in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota completed 19 of 28 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Colts. He added 32 yards on five carries.

Who doesn't love a fat-guy touchdown? Mariota provided one to open the second quarter Sunday, finding offensive lineman David Quessenberry in the back of the end zone for a one-yard score. The good times slowed after that as Mariota ended the game with a measly 5.5 yards per attempt after an opener versus the Browns in which he made some big plays downfield. A Thursday-night showdown with the Jaguars should help determine which Mariota -- the Week 1 or Week 2 variety -- fans can expect moving forward.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Tosses three TDs in blowout win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota completed 14 of 24 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns while adding 24 yards on three rushing attempts in Sunday's 43-13 win over Cleveland.

Mariota looked jittery in the pocket throughout the first half, as the offensive line failed to provide much protection against Cleveland's pass rush without left tackle Taylor Lewan (suspension). He got more comfortable with his team playing from ahead in the second half, finding Derrick Henry out of the backfield for a 75-yard score on which Henry did most of the work before hitting reliable tight end Delanie Walker for touchdowns of 11 and seven yards. Despite this strong performance, Mariota remains a middling fantasy option at best as the caretaker in a run-heavy offense heading into a Week 2 matchup with the Colts.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Quick exit Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota did not complete any of his three pass attempts before exiting Sunday's 18-6 preseason loss to Pittsburgh.

Mariota was removed after just two brief drives, only contributing points for Pittsburgh (a safety). The signal caller barely had any time to operate behind an offensive line that was abused by the Steelers defense. That may be why Mariota was pulled by head coach Mike Vrabel so early, as to not risk his oft-injured starter's health in an unfavorable situation. The 25-year-old was recently confirmed as the team's starter, but Mariota has a lot to prove in the final year of his rookie contract after four seasons of inconsistent play.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Still the team's top QB
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota remains in line to be the Titans' Week 1 starter at QB, backed up by Ryan Tannehill, Joe Rexrode of the Athletic reports.

That's a notion also put forth by Erik Bacharach of the Tennessean. Mariota's perch atop the posted depth chart is not something we expected to discuss at this stage, but as John Glennon of the Athletic notes, there's been some recent speculation that a QB competition between Mariota and Ryan Tannehill could be brewing. Tannehill is one of the NFL's more qualified backups, but his presence doesn't seem to be a threat to the short-term job security of Tennessee's incumbent starter. The story could be quite different if Mariota struggles come September.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Efficient in quarter of play
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota completed six of nine pass attempts for 63 yards, while throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Delanie Walker during Saturday's 22-17 loss to the Patriots. He also executed a successful two-point conversion with a two-yard run.

Mariota's rush on the two-point play had Titans players and coaches waiting with bated breath, as the fifth-year quarterback escaped unscathed from a John Elway, Super Bowl XXXII-esque helicopter landing. His performance in the preseason to this point has been somewhat indicative of the player he's been over the course of his career -- establishing a high completion rate with few explosive downfield throws. He's coming off a season in which 68.9 percent of his attempts were caught, but he finished 28th among qualified passers in average completed air yards (per Next Gen Stats). In a limited sample size thus far in the exhibition slate, Mariota is completing 58.8 percent of his throws with 5.1 yards per attempt and one touchdown.

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Not likely to play much, if at all Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mariota "won't play much" in Thursday's preseason opener against the Eagles, "if he plays at all," Jim Wyatt of the Titans' official site reports.

In last season's preseason opener, Mariota played just one series and he's not likely to see extended duty this time around as well. Per the report, third-stringer Logan Woodside figures to see plenty of action Thursday night.
