A 2014 fourth-round selection, Ellington never made an impact in San Francisco but caught on with the Texans last preseason. He even started in six of his 11 regular-season appearances, yet managed only 29 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns on 54 targets (6.1 YPT), mostly operating as Houston's No. 3 receiver. While Ellington's signing bonus suggests he'll have a good shot to stick on the team, his contract isn't indicative of a player locked into a key role. He'll likely face competition for the No. 3 job, be it from a veteran signing, a draft pick or someone already on the roster. Ellington finished both of the past two seasons on injured reserve due to hamstring injuries.
Ellington latched on with the Texans late during training camp last season and emerged as quality depth wideout, totaling 330 yards and two touchdowns on 29 receptions before landing on injured reserve after 11 games due to a hamstring injury. While it isn't clear where he stands in his recovery, Ellington should be back to full health in time for training camp. He's the favorite to slot in as the No. 3 receiver behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller.
Ellington sustained the hamstring injury against the Titans in Week 13 and landed on injured reserve shortly thereafter, but still finished third on the team in receptions. The 26-year-old enters 2018 as a restricted free agent, and the Texans' plans at wide receiver don't appear solidified behind top options DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller.
Ellington (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
With Ellington on IR, wideout DeAndrew White was added to the Texans' active roster. The loss of Ellington for the team's stretch run taxes the team's wideout depth behind top receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Braxton Miller (concussion), Chris Thompson and versatile running back Andre Ellington remain on hand, but ideally, from the Texans' perspective, Will Fuller (ribs) will be able to return sooner rather than later.
Ellington (hamstring) did not return to Sunday's game against the Titans, Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com reports.
Ellington was designated questionable to return Sunday before ultimately being ruled out. The 26-year-old had one reception for seven yards and 16 snaps prior to hurting his hamstring, and Braxton Miller has been the immediate beneficiary of his absence. There is no indication as to the severity of the injury at this point.
