Burfict (ankle, suspension) isn't practicing Tuesday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
Burfict limped off the field at the end of Monday's practice and was taken back to the locker room on a cart. He's already suspended for the first four weeks of the regular season, so only a severe injury would impact his prospects for the upcoming campaign. Jordan Evans is the favorite to fill in at weakside linebacker, offering ample IDP potential if he also locks down a role in the nickel defense.
Burfict, who was removed from the NFI list Monday, will not play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Bears, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
While Burfict has been medically cleared after being sidelined with a hamstring injury, it looks like the Bengals don't see a reason to rush the linebacker back to the playing field after just a few practices. Burfict will likely be set to play in next Saturday's game against the Cowboys after he has more practice sessions under his belt.
Burfict is still due to serve a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing drugs, but he'll be eligible to practice Monday with the apparent hamstring injury seemingly behind him. He likely won't play in the Bengals' preseason opener Thursday against the Bears, but he could appear in the team's second exhibition contest next Saturday versus the Cowboys if he avoids any setbacks. During his absence, expect Carl Lawson and Jordan Evans to see additional reps at the weak-side linebacker spot.
Set to serve a four-game suspension after violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing drugs, Burfict also has an apparent injury to worry about as he prepares for the 2018 campaign. There weren't any reports that emerged during the Bengals' offseason program that Burfict was banged up, but Geoff Hobson of the team's official site relays that it's believed the linebacker is nursing a tight hamstring. With Burfict on track to miss the first four weeks of the season regardless of his health, Jordan Evans and Carl Lawson could be poised to take on enhanced roles on the weak side.
The NFL made Burfict's four-game suspension official for a violation of the policy on performance-enhancing substances, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
The ban had been lingering on the fringes for nearly one month, but the league confirmed Burfict will miss the first four games of the 2018 campaign only days before the start of the Bengals' offseason program. He'll be able to take part on those workouts and all practices and games during training camp and the preseason. That being said, the tackle maven won't take the field until at least Week 5 of the regular season, depending upon where the team's bye lands. Expect Jordan Evans and Carl Lawson to fill in the gap at weak-side linebacker during Burfict's absence.
