Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Excellent debut for Dallas
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith totaled 11 tackles (six solo), one sack and two quarterback hits against the Rams on Sunday.

Smith looked great by any standard, but especially for a player who had been out of the league for five years. Even with his 31st birthday coming up later in September, Smith seems to have quite a bit left in the tank. Although his tackle rate will fall off in upcoming games, he's a candidate to emerge as one of the top IDPs in leagues where he's eligible on the defensive line.

Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Making good impression in camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith has consistently been in the backfield during the first couple days of practice and has shown few signs of rust despite his five-year layoff, Kyle Youmans of the Cowboys' official site reports.

The 30-year-old has been taking snaps with the first-team defense while the Cowboys wait for the newly signed Everson Griffen to clear intake protocols, and Smith has taken full advantage of his opportunities to line up opposite DeMarcus Lawrence. Griffen is expected to start once the team's defensive line is at full strength, but if Smith can return to anything close to his former Pro-Bowl form, the Dallas pass rush could be formidable this season.

Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Conditionally reinstated by league
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The NFL conditionally reinstated Smith (suspension) on Wednesday, allowing him to take part in the Cowboys' virtual offseason program, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Due to myriad personal and legal issues, Smith hasn't taken the field since 2015, when he racked up 28 tackles (21 solo) and 3.5 sacks over nine games with the Raiders. When Smith signed a one-year deal with Dallas in April, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports relayed that the edge rusher had worked hard to maintain his sobriety, and the NFL was apparently satisfied with the progress he's made off the field. The 2011 first-round pick is now on a path to resume his career in 2020, but he'll need to remain on his best behavior in the months to come to ensure his spot on the Dallas roster.

Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Hasn't yet met with commissioner
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith has yet to have an official meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell regarding his reinstatement, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Smith and Goodell did meet informally at an event in New York earlier this preseason, but as yet there's been no official meeting, a necessary step before the veteran edge rusher can return to an NFL lineup. Smith hasn't played in five years and recorded only 5.5 sacks over his last 16 games for the 49ers and Raiders in 2014-15, so even if he does get reinstated, it seems unlikely he'll provide a major boost to the Cowboys' pass rush.

Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Reinstatement unlikely before draft
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) isn't expected to be reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell prior to the NFL draft next week, Ed Werder of ESPN reports.

The veteran edge rusher, who hasn't played since 2015 due to an indefinite suspension under the league's old CBA, needs to be reinstated before he can participate in any activities with the Cowboys. Having Smith officially in the fold would give Dallas more security at a position the team is expected to address in some fashion during the draft, but the 30-year-old remains a complete wild card in terms of the kind of production he might be able to offer after such a long layoff.

Cowboys' Aldon Smith: Set for NFL return in Dallas
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) agreed to a one-year contract with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports.

The 30-year-old hasn't seen game action since 2015 with the Raiders, but he still managed to ink the one-year, $2 million deal with the Cowboys that includes an additional $2 million incentives based on sack production, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Smith has been on indefinite suspension for his numerous legal issues, but he's reportedly worked hard to maintain his sobriety, and according to Jim Trotter of, the edge rusher began the process of applying for reinstatement in mid-March. If cleared by the NFL to resume his career, Smith could provide a big boost to the Dallas pass rush.

Aldon Smith: Arrested again
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith was arrested Friday in San Francisco for allegedly violating a protective order originally issued on March 12, when the linebacker was arraigned on domestic violence charges, Jerry McDonald of the Mercury News reports.

This is the third time in two months that Smith has run into trouble with the law. On this occasion, Smith, who's required to wear an ankle monitor, allegedly violated a condition of his electronic monitoring while out on bail. He's currently a free agent after being released by the Raiders in early March.

Aldon Smith: Turns in self to police
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) turned himself into the San Francisco Police Department on Tuesday following an alleged domestic dispute over the weekend, Brendan Weber of NBC Bay Area reports.

In line for reinstatement from the NFL this month, Smith couldn't avoid legal issues and subsequently was released by the Raiders on Monday. As a result of the alleged incident with his fiancee, he faces misdemeanor charges of domestic violence, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism, according to Evan Sernoffsky of the San Francisco Chronicle. The NFL will hold off until the justice system works itself out, but Smith hasn't done himself any favors as it pertains to a return to professional football.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Set for March reinstatement
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) will be reinstated in March barring any further issues with substance abuse, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Smith remains subject to the league's drug program, but will be reinstated given he stays on the right path throughout the coming weeks. He'll certainly add another pass-rushing presence to a Raiders' defense that already boasts the newly minted 2016 Defensive Player of the Year in Khalil Mack.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Reinstatement to be reviewed in March
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The NFL won't review Smith's (suspension) potential reinstatement until March 15, CSN Bay Area reports.

The Raiders maintained some hope that Smith, who applied for reinstatement in October and met with commissioner Roger Goodell earlier this month, could be activated in time for the playoffs, but the league denied his bid for a 2016 return. The 27-year-old, who has appeared in 16 games over the past three seasons while incurring multiple suspensions along the way for substance abuse-related issues, will need to stay on the straight and narrow for the next three and a half months before the NFL reexamines his status for the 2017 season.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Meets with league officials
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) met with league officials Friday, CSN reports.

Smith -- who was eligible for reinstatement Nov. 17 -- completed the next step in his quest to get back on the football field in meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and league officials Friday. However, it isn't clear whether the meeting went well or not. He is reportedly in "fantastic shape", though, and would likely provide an instant boost to the Raiders' pass rush if given the opportunity.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Setting reinstatement meeting
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith is in the process of scheduling a meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell or another high-ranking league official to state his case for reinstatement, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Smith is nearing completion of his one-year suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Since the punishment was handed down, Smith entered a treatment center, and will hope to convince whomever hears his case that he's made the necessary changes in his life to resume his playing career without running into further off-field problems.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Applies for reinstatement
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) has applied for reinstatement into the NFL, Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Smith's one-year suspension that he was serving for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy is nearing an end, and after entering a treatment center in late July, Smith will once again attempt to make a return to the NFL.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Enters treatment center
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) has entered a treatment center, ESPN reports.

Smith's reason for seeking treatment is unclear, but it comes just days after a Periscope video titled "Fire up session" surfaced of an unidentified man, suspected to be him, talking about a hand-rolled cigarette shown on screen. In wake of that video, which appeared under an account previously used by Smith, the NFL has launched an investigation into whether he violated protocols required of a suspended player seeking reinstatement from a substance abuse violation. While that investigation continues, Smith's move to now enter a treatment facility hardly seems coincidental, and more details regarding his situation should surface soon.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Subject of league investigation
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) will be investigated by the NFL for a potential violation of protocols required for a player seeking reinstatement from a suspension for violating the substance abuse policy, reports.

Smith is currently serving a one-year suspension as a repeat violator of the league's substance abuse policy, but he could be subject to further discipline after a video recently circulated of an unidentified man, suspected to be him, talking about a hand-rolled cigarette shown on screen. The video is titled "Fire up session" and archived in a Periscope account Smith has used and clearly appeared on over the past two months. No stranger to off-field transgressions, Smith is eligible to apply for reinstatement in September, but the results of the league's investigation could ultimately impact his case and future availability altogether.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Inks two-year deal with Raiders
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Raiders and Smith (suspension) agreed to a two-year contract Monday, the team's official site reports.

In the midst of a one-year suspension for another violation of the NFL's policy for substances of abuse, Smith will remain where he spent the first nine games of the 2015 season, when he contributed 3.5 sacks among 28 tackles to the Raiders' pass rush. It remains to be seen whether he'll be strictly contained to a one-year ban, as the commissioner's office has been known to do their due diligence once a suspended player applies for reinstatement. Depending on further adjustments made to the defense in the offseason, free-agent addition Bruce Irvin appears set to man strongside linebacker in the meantime.

Aldon Smith: Finalizing Raiders deal
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (suspension) is in the process of finalizing a contract agreement with the Raiders, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Smith was suspended for one year back in November for repeated violations of the league's substance abuse policy, but it appears the Raiders would like to keep him under contract nonetheless. While Smith can't file for reinstatement until November of this year, Oakland's support of him while being suspended will hopefully help him clean up his act.

Raiders' Aldon Smith: Suspended for one year
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith has been suspended for one year as a result of his role in an incident on Aug. 28, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

While the specifics in the incident are unknown, Smith's ban relates to substance abuse, according to Ed Werder of ESPN. Considering Smith was suspended for the first nine games of the 2014 campaign, the Raiders will likely search elsewhere for pass-rushing help in the offseason, but Ray-Ray Armstrong is the logical candidate to take over at strong-side linebacker in the interim.

49ers release OLB Aldon Smith after arrest
by Ruben Palacios | CBS Sports Staff

In light of his most recent off-field issues, the 49ers have released linebacker Aldon Smith, according to an ESPN report.

Smith, who has a long history with legal problems, was arrested early Friday morning for hit and run, DUI and vandalism.

"This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues," a team statement read. "Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue."

Smith served a nine-game suspension last year after a number of legal issues. He was arrested in 2012 for DUI, and faced weapons charges later that year.

In seven games last season, Smith recorded 15 tackles and two sacks for San Francisco.
