No surgery or Pro Bowl for Matt Ryan after sprained AC joint

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan isn't going to play in the Pro Bowl on Sunday, but not for the reason that he wanted: He's bowing out because of an injury he suffered late in Atlanta's 28-24 NFC Championship Game loss to the 49ers.

Ryan sprained the AC joint in his non-throwing (left) shoulder, Falcons coach Mike Smith said Monday, and he will miss the All-Star exhibition as a result. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the third alternate to the NFC squad, should be announced as his replacement soon.

There is good news for the Falcons, though. Smith said that Ryan won't require surgery as a result of the injury, which he suffered when Ahmad Brooks tackled him on the Falcons' next-to-last drive against San Francisco.

And Smith added that Ryan, had the Falcons toppled the 49ers, would've been able to play in the Super Bowl.

The NFC Pro Bowl squad has taken some serious hits at quarterback thus far. Aaron Rodgers bowed out because of injury and was replaced by Drew Brees. Robert Griffin III bowed out because of knee surgery and was replaced by Eli Manning. And now Ryan is getting replaced by Wilson.
